Shut Down Long Creek

Shut Down Long Creek
  • Lorne Carter with Maine Youth Justice

A collaboration with Maine Youth Justice in support of their campaign for the closure of Long Creek Youth Development Center, a youth prison in South Portland. This documentary film features the voices of various MYJ activists and leaders who were formerly incarcerated in Long Creek. Shot at Long Creek (before we got kicked out), the surrounding neighborhood, and select locations in Lewiston, where several of these youth activists reside.

My film applies radical imagination, collaboration, individual experiences, and accountability in a creative partnership that accurately reflects the values of Maine Youth Justice. Up against a system of oppression predicated upon marginalizing and silencing certain perspectives, the documentary testifies to individual experiences as part of a collective effort towards healing and transformation. By raising each other’s voices in solidarity, we mend the wounds of the current system and prefigure the change we desire for our communities. Shut down Long Creek!
