Freedom & Captivity is sharing the work of a University of Maine Farmington (UMF) college course that approached incarceration through the lens of “Freedom and Captivity” during the Fall ’21 semester.

In the course, “ANT 277S | Incarceration Nation: Understanding and Imagining Freedom and Justice,” UMF students created story-map & writing projects on a topic of interest under the wide umbrella of “Freedom and Captivity.” They all developed engaging and informative presentations while learning new software (Arc GIS Story Maps) and collaborating amidst busy schedules during the final weeks of the semester. In addition to these story maps, students also published op-ed articles in the Sun Journal, Daily Bulldog, and Bangor Daily News to raise awareness on the topic of incarceration. Their work is shared below. This class was taught by Nicole Kellett, PhD, Associate Professor of Anthropology at UMF.
